February 2017 Chapter Chair Message

Hello Everyone,

First of all, how about those Patriots and their win last night! It’s a good time to be a New England fan, that’s for sure. Although I’m sure many of us nearly bit our nails clean off….

So now onto the business portion of this message. The chapter leadership board and I have started the process of planning our meetings and events for the upcoming year. We are excited about some of the opportunities that are available to us amongst our growing chapter membership with their vast range of backgrounds and expertise in various fields of security and law enforcement.

To start things off for the year we took advantage of a great learning opportunity and welcomed an invitation from the Southern CT Chapter to attend their February event at the Offices of Hartford Steam Boiler Insurance & Inspection in Hartford, CT. Please consider traveling to Hartford to attend this event on Thursday, February 9, 2017. Event details are available on our website.

Speaking of our website, I’d like to remind everyone that we made significant upgrades to it last year and are excited about some of the newest features available to us. The site is now mobile-friendly and each event will show a link to pay for meetings and events using a credit or debit card. We will be adding a PayPal link in the near future.

As far as the up and coming meetings and events in our area, we are currently arranging the details of the March meeting. Anyone interested in hosting a meeting at their facility can reach out to me directly. I will be sending out invitations with more information at the end of the month.

In March I will have more details regarding the April meeting, as well as the Scholarship Golf Tournament in May and the BBQ Bash in June. I know that it’s several months away, but I’m happy to announce that we are booked at the Springfield Sheraton for our 2017 WMass ASIS Law Enforcement Appreciation Dinner on October 18, 2017!

Lastly, I would like to say that if any of you have any suggestions or questions please feel free to reach out to me or any of the other chapter officers. As the new Chairperson I will do my best to continue the tradition of making this chapter the best investment it can be for all of members of our chapter.

See you soon and best regards,

Joe Cyr

Spring 2016 Chapter Chair Message

Hello Everyone

First of all, I wanted to start by expressing my appreciation for our former Chairperson Maureen Fuller and the wonderful job she has done over recent years. Having begun my tenure, I have a better understanding of how much skill she must have had to make running the chapter look as easy as she did.

The board and I have started the process of making some much needed updates to the Western Mass Chapter website. Our initial investment will make the site “mobile-friendly”.  In the future, as more funding becomes available, we hope to create a member’s only area with chapter financial information and a link to pay for events via PayPal or credit cards.

As far as the up and coming events, we are finalizing the details of the March meeting. It will be held at Pelican Products in South Deerfield on March 23, 2016 from 11:30AM – 1:30PM.  Chad Brower, Pelican’s new Security Manager, will be giving us his take on the challenges he faces in securing the facility as well as taking us for a tour.  Also, while we are still ironing out the details it looks like lunch will be catered by The Magic Spoon.  I will be sending out invitations with more information next week.

Our April event is planned to occur on or around April 20th.  While there are several options either in Springfield or to the North and West, we are working on finding a location on the eastern end of our geographic area.  If anyone has any ideas for good locations or contacts that you feel may be interested, please let me know.

The Annual Western Mass ASIS Golf Tournament will be held at Oak Ridge in Feeding Hills. We have a date set for Tuesday, May 17th.  We are pleased to announce that we have negotiated a deal with the country club that will allow us to maintain the low costs of admission that we have had in years past while still providing the same level of quality with some new twists.

The last event before our summer hiatus, and certainly one I am not planning on changing, is the June Barbeque Bash. As always, it will be held at Theodore’s Restaurant in Springfield.  We have not set a date yet but are looking at the third week in June.

Lastly, I would like to ask that if any of you have any suggestions, questions or comments to please feel free to send them to me. I will do my best to continue the tradition of making this chapter the best investment it can be for all of the members of our chapter.

See you in a few weeks,

John DeBarge Jr.

August 2015 Chapter Chair Message

Colleagues,

How quickly time flies! Our summer hiatus has come to an end and it is back to business. I hope you enjoyed the long, warm days of summer!

We have our Fall schedule set up with some educational opportunities and some great events.

Our September meeting is set up for Wednesday, September 16 at 11:30. We will be meeting at Mercy Hospital for a tour of the facility and lunch. Thanks to Tom Grondalski for making this happen for us! I will be sending out an invitation with all the details within the next few days.

Just after that from September 28-October 1 is the 61st Annual ASIS Expo and Exhibits to be held in Anaheim, CA. I know there will be a few members of our chapter in attendance. The program is jam packed with all kinds of educational events and some great key note speakers. It is an opportunity you can’t miss if you are able to attend.

Our October meeting this year will be our Annual Law Enforcement Appreciation Dinner. It will be held on October 21 at the Sheraton at Monarch Place in Springfield once again. We will be awarding scholarships to two WMass Criminal Justice Majors in the amount of $1500.00 each. We will additionally be honoring two members of Western Mass Law Enforcement for their service to the citizens of our communities.

In November we will be hosting the new DHS Infrastructure Production Specialist for Massachusetts, Tim Donnelly. He has presented already for some of our fellow security personnel in Springfield on the topic of protecting your business from self-radicalized terrorists. Details for this meeting will be forthcoming in the next few weeks.

Last but not least our December event will be our Holiday Social. The date, time and location will be posted on the website as soon as details have been finalized.

I hope to see you all next month at Mercy Hospital!

Best Regards,
Maureen

January 2015 Chapter Chair Message

Colleagues,

A new year has begun. Again, we have managed to survive Mother Nature and with any luck, spring will be here soon!

We have had our annual planning meeting to get things rolling for this year and have some great events coming in the first half.

Our February meeting will be a webinar titled “The Art of Security Leadership: How to Build Successful Risk-Based Security Programs”. We will, of course be having lunch and a new meeting perk, a 50/50 raffle. Additionally, if you bring a guest to a meeting this year both your lunch and the guest’s lunch will be free. The meeting invitations with all the pertinent info will be out soon.

For the next few months we have on our calendar, meetings scheduled for Crane Paper and Mohegan Sun before our annual Scholarship Golf Tournament in May and Barbeque Blast in June. Please check the website, www.wmass-asis.org for dates and times.

In addition to all of this, now is the time to renew your membership if you have not already done so. ASIS International has instituted new incentive for chapters who have the highest membership retention percentage. Our chapter could be awarded $500 for simply maintaining our membership. If you have not renewed your membership, please don’t forget to do it now. You can renew by clicking on the link on our website or by going to www.asisonline.org.

Last but not least, we have begun a Chapter Newsletter to be published quarterly. We will be sending out to Chapter members as well as publishing it on our website. We will be including updates on what is happening with our chapter as well as other chapters in New England. If you have events or stories to submit please contact one of the Chapter Officers.

I look forward to seeing all of you at the upcoming meetings! Stay warm

Best Regards,

Maureen

June 2014 Chapter Chair Message

Colleagues,

I hope this finds you all well and ready for vacation season. Here it comes ready or not!

Before we all head out on vacation our Annual Barbeque Bash is coming up. Back by popular demand we will be meeting at:

Theodore’s Restaurant
201 Worthington St, Springfield MA.
Date: 6/25/14
Time: 11:30-1:00

We will be enjoying some of the best Barbeque in Western Mass including Baby Back Ribs and Etouffe. The charge for the meeting will be $20 for food and soda.

We will be sharing with you the details of our Tenth Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament. This year we raised enough money to be able to give out some bigger scholarships so if you know a student who is enrolled in a CJ or Security Program encourage them to apply. The application deadline of August 14th is coming quickly. Additionally, if the student is interested in becoming a student member at a reduced rate they could receive matching funds from ASIS International. As a mother of three college grads I know everyone can use some free tuition money!

I will be sending a meeting invitation shortly. Please let me know by Monday 6/23/14 if you plan to attend.

Hope to see you all soon!

Best Regards,
Maureen

January 2014 Chapter Chair Message

Colleagues,

Our Sixth Annual Law Enforcement Appreciation Night will be held at the Sheraton Hotel and Conference Center in Springfield on Wednesday, February 19, 2014. Our event last year was a great success with over 135 people in attendance from over 30 Law Enforcement Agencies in Western Massachusetts being represented. This event affords us an opportunity to express our gratitude for all that our public sector partners do day after day in the protection of our societies and organizations.

As you are aware, all of our Law Enforcement partners are invited as guests of ours at no cost to them or their agencies. We are again asking for the support of all of our membership in sponsoring tables so that we can again facilitate the agencies that wish to attend this event.

We have been able to keep catering and room charge costs close to past events, so that table sponsorship will remain at $450.00 for this event. Individual Chapter members may attend for a charge of $50.00. This is a great price for a great event!

Our Keynote this year will be Bonnie Michelman, director of Security, Police and Outside Services at Mass General Hospital. She has graciously agreed to speak at this event about the Boston Bombings and how the Private/Public Sector Partnerships were leveraged to keep things moving as smoothly as possible.

This year we have some new things on the agenda. We will be offering spots in a limited vendor court during the social hour for $200.00. The vendors who would like to speak to guests about what products and services they offer will be able to set up their displays and talk to folks as they mingle.
If you need information about this please contact David Oles (doles@americanalarm.com).

We will also be announcing the names of two Western Mass Students who were each awarded $500 Scholarships to pursue their degrees in Criminal Justice.
Please contact me at your earliest with your intentions to sponsor so that I can organize the sponsorship list and attendee designations. If an invoice is needed please contact either David Oles, or myself and we will get it right out to you.

I want to thank you in advance for your continued support of this event.

November 2013 Chapter Chair Message

Greetings!

Happy Holiday Season to all of you! I cannot believe we are almost at the end of 2013. And what a year it has been.

From the Boston Bombings during the Patriots’ Day Boston Marathon to the Red Sox winning the World Series we have run the gamut of bad to good.

Our Chapter has had an outstanding and eventful year as well. Many great events and speakers helped us to provide some educational and networking opportunities to our members.

We had the privilege of meeting at Smith and Wesson, L-3, KEO, Bay Path College and most recently at Macy’s at the Auburn Mall for a presentation from Bonnie Michelman about the Boston Bombings.

At our most recent meeting we elected out Chapter Officers for 2014. The newly elected Officers are, Maureen Fuller, Chapter Chair. Dave Oles, Vice-Chair, Joe Cyr, Secretary, and John DeBarge Jr, Treasurer. Keith Ornelas will continue as Golf Tournament Chair and Kirk McGee will stay in place as Certification Chair.

Our next event, our annual Holiday Social, will be held on December 11, 2013 at the Tavern Restaurant in Westfield. I will be sending an invitation with all the details.

As we approach the upcoming year keep in mind that there are a plethora of Scholarship opportunities, from both our local Chapter as well as from ASIS International. If you are looking to advance your education please let one of our Board know so that we can help you to pursue the opportunities available.

As always we are on the look-out for new members; Security Professionals new to the industry, students looking for a career in Security or Criminal Justice, or folks who are in the industry who just may not know who we are and the opportunities available. If you know such a person please invite them to one of our upcoming meetings or events.

I wish you all a Happy and Healthy Holiday Season and hope to see you in December at our Holiday Social.

All the Best,

Maureen

August 2013 Chapter Chair Message

Colleagues,

I hope this finds you all well and rested after a great summer! Our Golf Tournament was a resounding success, the Barbeque bash was phenomenal, the Red Sox are still in first place and the weather has been great for outdoor activities (mostly). But now that summer is just about over we have some equally big things happening in the next few months. The ASIS Annual Seminar is coming next month in Chicago. If you have not already registered you still have time. We also have some great Chapter meetings in store for the next few months and the time has come to award the WMass ASIS Scholarships.

Our next meeting will be on, of all days, 9/11/13 and we will be meeting very appropriately at Smith and Wesson on Roosevelt Avenue in Springfield. I will be sending out meeting details today or tomorrow as soon as I have all the logistics. We have been invited to do a tour of the facility that takes approximately an hour to an hour and a half that will begin at 1:00 so I will need to know if you are coming and if you can stay for the tour.

We will additionally be having lunch at Smith and Wesson at their Cafeteria. Lunches are typically about $8.00 but there will be no additional charge for the meeting.

After lunch Kirk McGee will be there to discuss the Scholarship program and the Scholarships we will be awarding this year. I will need to know by Friday, 9/6/13 if you are planning on attending. We also have a very special guest for our October meeting. Bonnie Michaelman, Director of Police, Security and Outside Services at Mass General Hospital and former President of ASIS International will be sharing a presentation on Protecting a Major Hospital During a Time of Terror and Uncertainty. That meeting will be held at the Big Y Headquarters located at 2145 Roosevelt Ave in Springfield.

Please be on the lookout for the meeting invitation today or tomorrow for our September meeting. I hope to see you all there.

Best Regards,

Maureen

June 2013 Chapter Chair Message

Greetings All!

How time flies! It is June already and we are half way through the year.

We have been able to find some interesting topics for our meetings this year as well as some new and interesting venues. Our Law Enforcement Dinner in February was a rousing success with over 130 in attendance from all over the Western Mass area. Our March meeting was a luncheon held at Bay Path College with guest speakers who are members of Campus Public Safety speaking about the challenges faced protecting a campus. In April we were lucky to be invited to hold our meeting at L-3 KEO in Northampton. Joe Cyr, our Chapter Secretary and CSO at L-3 gave us a brief history of what L-3 KEO does and some of what he faces day to day securing the premises. That day we also hosted two members of the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office who spoke about prosecuting Financial Crimes and the Consumer Protection Unit who investigates those types of crimes.

Last month we held our 9th annual Golf Tournament to benefit our Scholarship Fund. It was a truly wonderful day in spite of some raindrops at the end of the day. We golfed this year in Westfield at Shaker Farms Country Club. Golfers came from all over Western Mass and CT, including representatives of the Conn ASIS Chapter. We gave away some great prizes including two trips from Jet Blue and a Jet Blue gift card, a laptop and printer. It was a great day allowing us to raise significant funds for the Scholarships we award annually.

This month will be our last meeting until the summer is done, our Annual Barbeque Bash to be held June 26. Details will be sent within the next day or two with all the logistical information.

We are working on setting up the fall meetings this month so keep an eye on the website for all the information on when and where. Additionally, don’t forget there is a lot of money out there in Scholarships for anyone who is looking to further their education. The info is all posted on the National website which you can access from our Western Mass website, www.wmass-asis.org.

I hope to see all of you at the June Barbeque bash at the end of the month.

Best Regards,

Greetings All!

The Annual Benefit Golf Tournament has come and gone and for those of you who were unable to attend last month, it was a rousing success! The weather was fabulous and a great time was had by all! Great food, great weather, great prizes, great fun, what more could you ask for?!?

Now June is here, pollen is in the air and the warm weather has arrived (almost!). Summer is coming and it is time for Barbeque season!

That being said our next even will be held at Theodores’ Blues, Brews and Barbeques in Springfield on June 20th. Theodore’s has been noted as having the “best barbeque in the valley!”

We will be having a wonderful barbecue buffet at 11:30. The charge for the meal will be $20.00. Any alcohol beverages that anyone would like to consume will be a la carte. The restaurant is located at 201 Worthington St, Springfield. Metered parking is available as well as off street parking in an adjacent lot for a nominal fee.

Please RSVP by Monday, June 18th so I can give the restaurant a head count and make sure there is plenty of barbeque for all.

Hope to see you Downtown!

Best,
Maureen
