The sixth annual Law Enforcement Appreciation Night hosted by the ASIS Western MA Chapter 212 was a great success! 150 guests, including speakers, were on the list and even though the New England weather kept some away, we still had a great turnout. Thanks to all for coming and celebrating the great level of cooperation between both the public and private sectors in Western MA!
Our Sixth Annual Law Enforcement Appreciation Night will be held at the Sheraton Hotel and Conference Center in Springfield on Wednesday, February 19, 2014. Our event last year was a great success with over 135 people in attendance from over 30 Law Enforcement Agencies in Western Massachusetts being represented. This event affords us an opportunity to express our gratitude for all that our public sector partners do day after day in the protection of our societies and organizations.
As you are aware, all of our Law Enforcement partners are invited as guests of ours at no cost to them or their agencies. We are again asking for the support of all of our membership in sponsoring tables so that we can again facilitate the agencies that wish to attend this event.
We have been able to keep catering and room charge costs close to past events, so that table sponsorship will remain at $450.00 for this event. Individual Chapter members may attend for a charge of $50.00. This is a great price for a great event!
Our Keynote this year will be Bonnie Michelman, director of Security, Police and Outside Services at Mass General Hospital. She has graciously agreed to speak at this event about the Boston Bombings and how the Private/Public Sector Partnerships were leveraged to keep things moving as smoothly as possible.
This year we have some new things on the agenda. We will be offering spots in a limited vendor court during the social hour for $200.00. The vendors who would like to speak to guests about what products and services they offer will be able to set up their displays and talk to folks as they mingle.
If you need information about this please contact David Oles (email@example.com).
We will also be announcing the names of two Western Mass Students who were each awarded $500 Scholarships to pursue their degrees in Criminal Justice.
Please contact me at your earliest with your intentions to sponsor so that I can organize the sponsorship list and attendee designations. If an invoice is needed please contact either David Oles, or myself and we will get it right out to you.
I want to thank you in advance for your continued support of this event.

Happy Holiday Season to all of you! I cannot believe we are almost at the end of 2013. And what a year it has been.
From the Boston Bombings during the Patriots’ Day Boston Marathon to the Red Sox winning the World Series we have run the gamut of bad to good.
Our Chapter has had an outstanding and eventful year as well. Many great events and speakers helped us to provide some educational and networking opportunities to our members.
We had the privilege of meeting at Smith and Wesson, L-3, KEO, Bay Path College and most recently at Macy’s at the Auburn Mall for a presentation from Bonnie Michelman about the Boston Bombings.
At our most recent meeting we elected out Chapter Officers for 2014. The newly elected Officers are, Maureen Fuller, Chapter Chair. Dave Oles, Vice-Chair, Joe Cyr, Secretary, and John DeBarge Jr, Treasurer. Keith Ornelas will continue as Golf Tournament Chair and Kirk McGee will stay in place as Certification Chair.
Our next event, our annual Holiday Social, will be held on December 11, 2013 at the Tavern Restaurant in Westfield. I will be sending an invitation with all the details.
As we approach the upcoming year keep in mind that there are a plethora of Scholarship opportunities, from both our local Chapter as well as from ASIS International. If you are looking to advance your education please let one of our Board know so that we can help you to pursue the opportunities available.
As always we are on the look-out for new members; Security Professionals new to the industry, students looking for a career in Security or Criminal Justice, or folks who are in the industry who just may not know who we are and the opportunities available. If you know such a person please invite them to one of our upcoming meetings or events.
I wish you all a Happy and Healthy Holiday Season and hope to see you in December at our Holiday Social.
All the Best,
Chapter Chair WMass
I hope this finds you all well and rested after a great summer! Our Golf Tournament was a resounding success, the Barbeque bash was phenomenal, the Red Sox are still in first place and the weather has been great for outdoor activities (mostly). But now that summer is just about over we have some equally big things happening in the next few months. The ASIS Annual Seminar is coming next month in Chicago. If you have not already registered you still have time. We also have some great Chapter meetings in store for the next few months and the time has come to award the WMass ASIS Scholarships.
Our next meeting will be on, of all days, 9/11/13 and we will be meeting very appropriately at Smith and Wesson on Roosevelt Avenue in Springfield. I will be sending out meeting details today or tomorrow as soon as I have all the logistics. We have been invited to do a tour of the facility that takes approximately an hour to an hour and a half that will begin at 1:00 so I will need to know if you are coming and if you can stay for the tour.
We will additionally be having lunch at Smith and Wesson at their Cafeteria. Lunches are typically about $8.00 but there will be no additional charge for the meeting.
After lunch Kirk McGee will be there to discuss the Scholarship program and the Scholarships we will be awarding this year. I will need to know by Friday, 9/6/13 if you are planning on attending. We also have a very special guest for our October meeting. Bonnie Michaelman, Director of Police, Security and Outside Services at Mass General Hospital and former President of ASIS International will be sharing a presentation on Protecting a Major Hospital During a Time of Terror and Uncertainty. That meeting will be held at the Big Y Headquarters located at 2145 Roosevelt Ave in Springfield.
Please be on the lookout for the meeting invitation today or tomorrow for our September meeting. I hope to see you all there.

How time flies! It is June already and we are half way through the year.
We have been able to find some interesting topics for our meetings this year as well as some new and interesting venues. Our Law Enforcement Dinner in February was a rousing success with over 130 in attendance from all over the Western Mass area. Our March meeting was a luncheon held at Bay Path College with guest speakers who are members of Campus Public Safety speaking about the challenges faced protecting a campus. In April we were lucky to be invited to hold our meeting at L-3 KEO in Northampton. Joe Cyr, our Chapter Secretary and CSO at L-3 gave us a brief history of what L-3 KEO does and some of what he faces day to day securing the premises. That day we also hosted two members of the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office who spoke about prosecuting Financial Crimes and the Consumer Protection Unit who investigates those types of crimes.
Last month we held our 9th annual Golf Tournament to benefit our Scholarship Fund. It was a truly wonderful day in spite of some raindrops at the end of the day. We golfed this year in Westfield at Shaker Farms Country Club. Golfers came from all over Western Mass and CT, including representatives of the Conn ASIS Chapter. We gave away some great prizes including two trips from Jet Blue and a Jet Blue gift card, a laptop and printer. It was a great day allowing us to raise significant funds for the Scholarships we award annually.
This month will be our last meeting until the summer is done, our Annual Barbeque Bash to be held June 26. Details will be sent within the next day or two with all the logistical information.
We are working on setting up the fall meetings this month so keep an eye on the website for all the information on when and where. Additionally, don’t forget there is a lot of money out there in Scholarships for anyone who is looking to further their education. The info is all posted on the National website which you can access from our Western Mass website, www.wmass-asis.org.
I hope to see all of you at the June Barbeque bash at the end of the month.

We had a great turnout and results for this year’s Western Mass Scholarship Golf Tournament! A bit of rain, but overall a great day. Make sure you check out the pictures!
The Annual Benefit Golf Tournament has come and gone and for those of you who were unable to attend last month, it was a rousing success! The weather was fabulous and a great time was had by all! Great food, great weather, great prizes, great fun, what more could you ask for?!?
Now June is here, pollen is in the air and the warm weather has arrived (almost!). Summer is coming and it is time for Barbeque season!
That being said our next even will be held at Theodores’ Blues, Brews and Barbeques in Springfield on June 20th. Theodore’s has been noted as having the “best barbeque in the valley!”
We will be having a wonderful barbecue buffet at 11:30. The charge for the meal will be $20.00. Any alcohol beverages that anyone would like to consume will be a la carte. The restaurant is located at 201 Worthington St, Springfield. Metered parking is available as well as off street parking in an adjacent lot for a nominal fee.
Please RSVP by Monday, June 18th so I can give the restaurant a head count and make sure there is plenty of barbeque for all.
Hope to see you Downtown!

What a great start to our year! Beyond just the wonderfully warm, snowless weather we have had (until last week!) we have had some outstanding opportunities to learn and network.
In January we had a tour of the amazing new Baystate Health Systems facility in January thanks to Tom Lynch and his staff. In February we had a fabulous Fourth Annual Law Enforcement Appreciation Dinner at the Monarch Place Sheraton in Springfield with special guest speaker, Captain Peter Higgins. Attending were over 130 public and private sector security professionals from all walks of life.
And now onto March. This month’s meeting has been changed slightly. Springfield Police Commissioner, William Fitchett, will attend out meeting on March 21, 2012 to speak about the success the Springfield Police have had with their new initiative, Operation Badge, in reducing the violent crime rate in Springfield. The meeting will be held at the Big Y Corporate office at 2145 Roosevelt Ave, Springfield. More information will follow before the end of the week.
I hope to see you all in the upcoming months. Meeting dates are as follows:
- April 18 – Noble Hospital – Robert Hassett
- May 23 – Westover Municipal Golf Course – Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament.
Have a safe and healthy end to the winter season. Keep your fingers crossed for calm, warm weather.

Octobers Technology Meeting – IP Cameras and Mass Notification Systems
Presenter- Ted Curtin of Repworks
Some quick chapter news updates. We had a great meeting last month. Nationally known speaker and security consultant Bill Alford from the International Lighthouse Group provided us with a great session on managing the media in crisis situations. It was a very informative presentation with lots of valuable take aways. In keeping with our chapter’s goals to continually provide educational value whenever we can, this month we are able to offer another professional development session. Our fellow chapter member, Ted Curtain, CPP will be presenting on Utilization of Technology in the Security Field.
This month’s meeting will be a luncheon at Big Y Corporate Offices on Wednesday, October 12th. The meeting will start at 11:30am. The cost of the meeting will be $15.00 per person to cover the catering expenses.
Coming up for the rest of the year, on Wednesday, November 16th, Jerry Hayes co-chair of “Rebuild Springfield” and Bob Hassett of Springfield’s Office of Emergency Preparedness will give us some great insights of the effects on resources and people regarding the response and recovery of the challenges faced as a result of the tornado damaged suffered this past June. Ray Muise of Mass Mutual will host this meeting.
December 14th we will have our annual Holiday Social and the swearing in of new Chapter officers.
Our new and improved website should be up and running very soon and I will send a quick note to all when it is ready so you can check it out and give me your feedback.
Please RSVP to me prior to October 8th so that we can plan the catering and room reservation.
